Apple block and Porcupine

Was out with Duane this morning to add a apple block to a post to see if I could attract the woodpeckers helping them in this dry period as well as increase some photo opportunities. The block has six nails to hold up to 6 apples. I have heard that they will perfectly eat out the apple flesh leaving just the skin.

As we were getting ready to leave Duane saw movement under the trees – a porcupine. I made a dash for the camera and started towards the porcupine which by now was in a frozen position. With all the branches in the way I had to get within a few feet of the critter but managed to get some shots off.

Last week we were having a meal under the trees and a skunk came to visit – it came right up to table just as if it was invited. We all watched with great interest as we well know the long lasting effects of being ‘skunked’. It was really something special to see it come so close – but I’m guessing the sad part is that this is not normal and that the drought played a large part in making it be so bold.
